While many churches fled the urban core of the US cities for the suburbs, we never lost our passion for urban ministry. Through real estate ups and downs as well as the realities of maintaining an older sanctuary, First Baptist has stayed planted the neighborhood. Our presence is an open door for God’s presence to be felt in our community.
Here are some ways we practice Presence and Service in our Neighborhood:
Community Meal
Each Saturday a Community Meal is served by a partnering church or organization for the homeless and vulnerable in our part of the city. First Baptist will be serving the meal in 2017 on May 13th, August 12th and December 16th. All are welcome to help.
Community Feast
We serve a Community Feast each year at Christmastime. Members of the church and community share a special holiday meal with the participants of the weekly community meal and celebrate Christmas afterward together in a musical service.
VBS and Carnival
The neighborhood is invited to celebrate children through the yearly Vacation Bible School and back to school Carnival.
Our VBS is a week long adventure that the children from First Baptist Omaha as well as the neighborhood go on, where they learn about Jesus. The back to school Carnival is a fun outreach where kids play games to earn free backpacks and school supplies. Families are invited to eat food cooked on the grill and the neighborhood enjoys some lively activity on the corner of Park Avenue and Harney.
